How does hypnotherapy work?
Hypnotherapy works in harmony with our unconscious mind. During the relaxed state of hypnosis, your unconscious can begin to utilise your own inner resources, in order to gradually bring about change. New positive goals can then be addressed, allowing a renewed sense of freedom and possibilities.
How does it feel to be hypnotised?
Hypnotherapy creates a very pleasant state of relaxation for the patient, where they then allow access to the unconscious. During this relaxed state, suggestions, previously agreed with the patient, are offered, helping them to achieve desired goals.
Will i be asleep?
No..... you will be aware and in control at all times, your mind calm and relaxed. The word ‘sleep’ can be used in hypnosis, but only as a signal for the mind to relax.
Will I be under the therapist’s control?
No........this is a myth, you will always be in control. No one can be hypnotised against their will. Patient and therapist work together to achieve positive changes.
How will I know I’m experiencing trance?
The trance state may not be as you imagined, in fact we experience altered states of consciousness daily (e.g. daydreaming, reading). You will hear everything that is said, and will be aware of your surroundings, feeling focused and alert, but pleasantly calm and relaxed.
Is it safe?
Yes - Hypnotherapy is safe, if carried out by a registered professional, and when used for therapeutic purposes. It is not harmful in any way.
What can I expect during a session?
A session lasts for approximately an hour to an hour and a half.
Initially I will gather information then, following discussion, we will set goals based on what you want to achieve. We then focus on hypnotherapy, tailored to your individual needs.
Using hypnosis techniques, we can begin to bring about beneficial change. I will also teach you self-help skills to enhance and support those ongoing changes.
These may include self-hypnosis, coping strategies, and breathing techniques.
I will then give you 'homework', to help further your progress, outwith sessions.
If you need advice in between sessions, you can contact me by email.
What about confidentiality?
Confidentiality is priority, and patients can feel safe and secure in the knowledge that whatever is discussed, it will remain totally confidential.
Can i have hypnosis when i am on medication?
Please note that hypnosis can be contra-indicated with certain medications. If you are unsure, please call. Thankyou.
Can hypnosis work instead of medication?
Hypnosis should never be seen as a substitute for medical treatment, rather as complimentary to it. If you are experiencing a medical problem, please seek advice from your medical practitioner
