Hypnotherapy for Anxiety
Anxiety is a common experience.
It represents the ‘organism’ within us being stimulated in order to deal with a perceived danger.
That was fine for our cavemen ancestors who were frequently threatened by wild animals!.
They lived in a world where dangers and threats were immediate and physical, so they developed the ‘flight or fight’ response, where the heart rate increases, pupils dilate and so on, as the body prepares for action.
In modern times, we are no longer open to such immediate threats, however the ‘flight or fight’ response remains.
Although anxiety can sometimes be justified, and in very small doses, can help us to ‘perform’ at our best, it is infrequently rational, and can hinder our day to day lives.
Hypnosis sessions can be successful in treating anxiety, by helping to relax the mind, assisting you in understanding symptoms and teaching you coping techniques.
As anxiety affects both mind and body, by relaxing the mind, we are sending a signal to the body to relax.
As tension leaves the body, the anxiety lessens.
It is impossible to be anxious and relaxed at the same time.
Hypnosis is also effective in dealing with ‘Performance Anxiety’. Perhaps you have an interview coming up, an exam, presentation or any other type of situation where you fear ‘negative evaluation’?.
We become anxious in such circumstances, because we are ‘internally focused’, monitoring our bodily symptoms, making negative ‘self- statements’ and perhaps comparing events to a similar past event which was a negative experience.
We convince ourselves that this experience WILL be the same.
Hypnosis helps to change our focus to ‘external’ focusing on what’s going on around us and basically ‘forgetting’ about ourselves.
